Why Fiberglass Insulation is Inferior

Why Fiberglass Insulation is Inferior - Image 1

Today we’re going to break down the cons of using fiberglass insulation and explain why it’s not the best option.

It’s important to pick the right kind of insulation for your basement or crawl space since it impacts the overall comfortability of your entire home.

Fiberglass may be a cheap and quick option in the beginning, but it can come with many issues down the road. It’s not worth it in the long run to install this insulation in your home, just to have to replace it over and over again.

Here are some of the issues that fiberglass insulation has been known to have or cause:

•    When fiberglass insulation gets wet or absorbs moisture, it loses R-value. This means that its ability to insulate your basement or crawl space decreases.

•    If the fiberglass insulation becomes damp or wet, it tends to fall apart and out of your floor joists, making a total mess in your basement or crawl space.

•    Fiberglass insulation is loose, which means air can pass through it.  When placed inside a vented crawl space with the paper or foil side facing up and the exposed fiberglass facing down, it pretty much defeats the whole purpose.

•    Air passing through your fiberglass batts means you’ll most likely have rooms upstairs that feel cold and uncomfortable. Your upper floors may also feel cold, causing you to crank up the heat. More frequent use of your heat can mean higher energy bills.

•    Mold has also been known to grow on fiberglass insulation. It can grow on the paper facing, especially if it becomes wet or damp in any way. It also contains some organic material in the resin that is used to set the fibers, which mold can also grow on.

The bottom line is that no one wants mold to grow on their insulation, to have to replace it constantly, or increased energy bills because the fiberglass insulation fails to do its job in the first place.
