DON'T Do This to Your Crawl Space

There’s the right way to tackle a nasty crawl space….and then there’s the wrong way. 

Here’s a list of things you should NOT do to a crawl space in an attempt to repair it:

1.    Do not install a vapor barrier on the bottom of your wooden floor joists. This can trap moisture above it, which will in turn rot the wood. 

2.    Do not close any air vents without sealing off the crawl space from the earth, and vice versa. Preventing unconditioned outside air and moisture from coming inside is crucial to ensuring the integrity of your crawl space.

3.    Avoid using a fan to blow any outside air directly into your crawl space. You should also never use a fan to blow air out of your crawl space either. Power fans can make any mold, moisture, rot, or energy problem even worse! 

4.    Do not install a liner or concrete on top of your crawl space’s dirt floor without removing the organic matter inside first. The reason being that mold can grow on organic matter, especially if it gets wet.

5.    Do not depressurize your crawl space if it has a combustible appliance inside.

6.    Never run a dryer vent into your crawl space. It will only add more moisture into your crawl space.
